There are a number of misconceptions and innovated practices in the month of Muharram. Let’s understand each in the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah.
1. Day of Ashoora is about the death of husayn radiallahu Anhu:
This is one of the major misconceptions. Indeed the tragic death of husayn radiallahu Anhu shatters many hearts, even till this date but the day of Ashoora was established during the time of prophet peace be upon him, long before husayn radiallahu Anhu was born, and this is something that we learn from the Ahadith-
*Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to Madeenah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Ashura. He said, “What is this?” They said, “This is a good day, this is the day when Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy and Moosa fasted on this day.” He said, “We are closer to Moosa than you.” So he fasted on this day and told the people to fast. (Bukhari 1865)
2. Making special meals on the 10th of Muharram and distributing among the poor, seeking reward
3. Thinking Muharram and Safar are unlucky months for marriage
4. Hitting oneself to show grief
Our bodies are amanah from ALLAH. And that is why, Self harm is prohibited in Islam.
Al Bukhari and Muslim narrated that the Prophet peace be upon him said: “He who slaps his cheeks, tears his clothes and follows the ways and traditions of the Days of Ignorance is not one of us.”
Therefore we must avoid every act that can lead to misguidance and sin in shaa ALLAH. May ALLAH keep us amongst those who follow his path with good intentions and right manner (i.e in accordance to Qur’an and sunnah) Aameen
